Central golfers win Huron Invitational

Aberdeen Central golfers took two of the top three spots in the individual portion, while the Golden Eagles edged Mitchell for the team honors at the Huron Invitational girls’ golf tournament Tuesday at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron.

Olivia Braun and Leah Gough finished second and third, respectively. Braun’s round of 78 was just one stroke off the lead. Gough finished with an 85.

Morgan Jones was tied for seventh with her round of 87, while Emma Dohrer finished just outside the top 10.

Central coach Kim Zimmerman said he liked what he saw from his team, particularly in terms of team scores.

“I was satisfied with our comeback from five days ago in Harrisburg,” he said. “I wasn’t worried, but I didn’t think we were 19 or 20 strokes worse than (Mitchell). … I feel better about where we were at score-wise in relation to them.”

While Central’s final score wasn’t as low as it was in Harrisburg, the overall picture was positive, Zimmerman said.

“Our score was worse today, but it’s misleading,” he said. “We shot 343 today, we were 329 at Harrisburg, but you have to take into account weather conditions and the type of course.“

Zimmerman added that some girls had better days and some didn’t, but with just two outdoor practices and two outdoor meets to date, he’s hopeful consistency will come in time.

“I’m hopeful we’ll see some big improvements when we get out and see the ball on the green and get the ball in the air,” he said, noting that the Golden Eagles are one of the last Class AA squads to be able to consistently practice outdoors.

Central is set to compete at the Parkston Invitational on Friday, weather permitting. Next week brings a trip to Pierre for the Pierre Invitational on Tuesday.

“That’s important,” Zimmerman said, “because that’s the site of the state tournament.”

Team scores: 1, Aberdeen Central, 343; 2, Mitchell, 344; 3, Watertown, 367; 4, Huron, 395.
