A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 25-May 1:

Last year on April 25, 2020: Former Warner and North Dakota State standout Derrek Tuszka was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of the NFL draft. He was the 254th player taken in this year’s draft. He would play in nine
NFL games for the Broncos during the 2020 season.

10 years ago on April 29, 2011: Northern State women’s basketball recruit Sami Smith of Sioux Falls Washington can be seen in a Warriors’ uniform year-round. Smith is best known as a standout for Aberdeen native and SFW coach Nate Malchow’s powerhouse basketball team. However, she also runs cross country in the fall and is one of the state’s best golfers and track athletes simultaneously in the spring. She also has a 3.8 grade-point average and is known for logging hundreds of hours of community service.

20 years ago on April 28, 2001: The winning teams took different paths to reach the same destination at the 16th annual McDonald’s Four Star Meet at Swisher Field in Aberdeen. The Aberdeen Roncalli girls had just one individual winner (Riley Schochenmaier in the 300 hurdles) but used its depth to compile 138 points to win the Class A portion of the meet. The Sisseton boys’ team ran away to a 46-point win behind seven first-place finishes. With 22 athletes, Sisseton placed in every Class A boys’ event except the shot put and the 200- and 400-meter dashes.

30 years ago on May 1, 1991: The American Legion announced Fargo will host the 67 th annual Legion World Series in 1992 as well as the 1995 Legion World Series. The 1991 Legion series will feature more than 4,200 teams across the nation for players 15 to 18. Almost 60 percent of current MLB players played Legion ball. Aberdeen hosted the 1965 Legion World Series (won by Charlotte, N.C.).

40 years ago on May 1, 1981: St. Cloud State, Minnesota-Duluth and Northern State are in position to battle for the Northern Intercollegiate Conference men’s tennis title on the final day of the event. The Wolves advanced three singles players to the finals (Mike Sweetman at No. 1, Mark Sweetman at No. 3 and John Carrels at No. 5) and one doubles team (Mike Sweetman and Mark Parrott at No. 1).

50 years ago on May 1, 1971: Northern State track coach Al Sahli expects two of his freshman runners to challenge for titles and possibly even break records at the upcoming NAIA District 12 track meet. Northern’s Steve Schulte has the best time in the 440-yard run (49.6 seconds) and his teammate Loren Kambestad of Bristol has some of the top times in the mile, two-mile and three- mile races.
