PIERRE – The Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles won five events at the Pierre American Legion Relays on Monday.

The Central boys won four of those events. The relay team of Aiden Heimann, Gabe Johnson, Carter Dingman, and Drew Salfrank captured the 1,600-meter relay title, winning with a time of 3:28.18. Heimann also won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of :40.28, while Salfrank topped the field in the 400-meter dash with a time of :50.63. The fourth and final win for the Golden Eagle boys came from Tyler Bain, who won the high jump with a leap of six feet.

Central boys’ coach Greg Murley was impressed with many of his athletes’ performances.

“Our throwers competed well for us today. We had three kids place in the javelin,” Murley said. “Jaxon Ladner (threw) 140-5 to place third. Brian Johnson set a new PR in the shot (put) with 48-9.50. On the track, our 4×800 ran our best time of the year to place second. Joe Perkins is working hard for us and placed second in the mile.”

In addition to the second-place finish in the 4×800, the Golden Eagle boys also had second place finishes in the 4×200 and 4×100-meter relays. Dingman earned a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash, while Brian Johnson placed third in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Avery Ligon finished in sixth place in the 100-meter dash.

Other area performances included Webster’s Drew Reetz finishing in first place in the pole vault with a leap of 13-feet, 6-inches. Teammate Jaiden McCreary finished second with a vault of 13 feet. Mobridge-Pollock’s Simon Fried finished second in the 300-meter hurdles and 800-meter run, while the Tigers’ 3,200-meter relay finished in fifth place. Herreid-Selby Area’s Brenden Begeman placed fourth in the shot put.

On the girls’ side, the Golden Eagles had one first place finisher, with Ciara Frank winning the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 5-inches, a personal best. Breckan Santjer finished second in the pole vault, while teammate Kiana Joerger placed fifth in the same event. Regan Lust placed second in the long jump and third in the high jump, while Madison Hochstetter finished second in the 100-meter hurdles, while also tying for seventh in the high jump.

Central girls’  coach Jim Appl was pleased with how his team competed.

“We had three-quarters of our team or more improve on one phase of something or another,” Appl said. “We had multiple PR’s on occasions today for kids. Again, with that being the case, it was just a fabulous day for us.”

Among those fabulous performances was Addison Everson, who performed well in three events, including second place in the triple jump, sixth place in the 200-meter dash, and seventh place in the long jump. Appl noted that Everson has improved in a short amount of time, which is a testament to the work the team has put in this season.

“She just started triple jumping this year, and she went (34-feet, 8-inches) today, and looking at kids like that who just started two weeks ago, she was at 31 (feet),” Appl said. “We had a lot of kids who really made gains, especially in our field events.”

Other performances from Aberdeen Central included Taryn Hermansen placing second in the shot put, Lucy Fritz placing third in the long jump, Abigail Witte finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash, and the trio of Maddi Aldridge, Grace Kuch, and Elisha Snell placing fifth, sixth, and seventh in the discus, respectively. Kuch also placed fifth in the javelin, while Eme Mounga finished in fifth place in the 400-meter dash. Central also had a pair of third place finishes in the 4×200 and 4×800-meter relays.

Other performances included Mobridge-Pollock’s Ryli Thompson placing second in the 400-meter dash and fourth in the 100-meter dash, while teammate Heidi Olson finished in second place in the 1,600-meter run and third place in the 3,200-meter run. The Tigers also placed fifth in the 3,200-meter relay.

Murley was glad the team was able to compete and looks forward to what the rest of the week will bring.

“It was a great day to be outside and compete,” Murley said. “We look forward to returning to Pierre later in the week to compete again.”

The Golden Eagles are scheduled to return to Pierre for a meet on Friday.

Appl said the team needs to take advantage of the opportunities they are given in order to improve moving forward.

“We talked about, before the week started, our goal here is to take advantage of the day,” Appl said. “Moving forward, we’ve got another meet this week, and then after that, we’ve got four weeks left. We have to take advantage of the time we’re offered to improve. That’s kind of the key there.”
