Central sweeps Sioux Falls foes in home opener

The Aberdeen Central tennis team bounced back from a pair of tough losses on Monday with a pair of dominant wins Tuesday during its first home action of the season.

The Golden Eagles took down Sioux Falls Jefferson 7-2, then claimed an 8-1 win over Sioux Falls Roosevelt to wrap up the day at the Holgate Courts.

It was a nice bounce-back performance, said Central coach Trent Kurtz, after the Golden Eagles felt the stinging end of a pair of 7-2 decisions Monday.

The day got off to a delayed start for both squads, as the Sioux Falls squads experienced transportation issues on their way to the Hub City.

“We had some slow stretches in singles in a couple flights,” Kurtz said. “We could have done a little better there, but they know that. Even a couple flights where we picked up wins, we weren’t consistent all the way through.”

That all changed once the Golden Eagles hit doubles play, however.

“We really played well,” Kurtz said. “We won all six doubles on the day, but it really started during doubles of that Jefferson match. We really picked up our intensity and played really well.”

Indeed, the Golden Eagles lost just one match the rest of the way, that coming on Jack Riggs’ singles loss against Roosevelt, a loss that Kurtz claimed responsibility for.

“Probably shouldn’t have played him today,” Kurtz said. “He really wanted to play today. He was sick (Monday) and wasn’t able to finish his second matches against Washington, so I probably should have kept him out.”

Kurtz said Riggs started his match with a strong early lead, but ran out of steam down the stretch.

“That’s just part of being sick,” Kurtz said.

The rest of the lineup had strong performances, however, running the table against the Rough Riders.

“(Roosevelt) plays a different style than we see a lot,” Kurtz said. “They play with a lot of slice and keep the ball in play. It was a lot of different tennis today, and I thought our kids really did a good job of adjusting to it.”

Amongst the Golden Eagles making some of those adjustments was senior Sekou Gogue, who won all four of his matches Tuesday after coming up short in a couple tiebreakers Monday.

“It feels really good,” Gogue said, “especially after the way I struggled yesterday. It felt good to work for those wins. We were close with (Roosevelt). We just had to grind a few out. That felt good.”

Sophomore AJ Prehn also bounced back with four wins Tuesday.

“It feels great,” Prehn said. “I started off in kind of a bad groove in singles, but I found it pretty quick and I was able to get up and win that game.”

Prehn said doubles action was more of the same, as he and partner Mitchell Hofer cruised to a 10-4 victory.

“We’ve always had good chemistry and today was just spot on,” Prehn said.

Central will get one day of practice before heading West River for the Rapid City Invite Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
