Roncalli edges Roosevelt, falls to Jefferson

The Aberdeen Roncalli tennis team split a pair of 5-4 decisions Tuesday afternoon, exacting a measure of revenge in the process.

The Cavaliers, who lost four tiebreakers in a 5-4 loss to Roosevelt less than 10 days ago, got the reversal of fortune they needed, specifically in the form of Cason Hellwig’s victory at No. 1 singles, to begin the day.

“We knew last time we could beat them, but we fell short,” Hellwig said. “We just had to step up our game a little bit.”

Hellwig set the tone in that endeavor, taking a 10-3 victory over Roosevelt’s Brock Kruger.

“Last time, I got a little frustrated during the match, which ended up causing me to lose, I think,” Hellwig said. “This time I just tried to keep my cool.”

And if it was revenge he wanted, he certainly got it. Hellwig said patience was his main strategy on Tuesday.

“I just waited for him to make mistakes,” Hellwig said.

Gannon May and Jacob Bellefeuille picked up wins at third flight and sixth flight singles, as well, while the Cavaliers also got wins at first flight and second flight doubles to finish off the win.

Hellwig and Bellefuille also came up victorious against Sioux Falls Jefferson in singles play, but it was the visiting Cavaliers that came away with the team win.

“Tough loss to Jefferson,” said Roncalli coach Paige Hermanson, “but it’s reassuring to know as small as our school and program is at this point in time, we’re still hanging right in there with some big schools.”

Hemanson said the shortage of outdoor practice and playing time is taking its toll in these early-season matches.

“We had our second outside practice (Monday),” she said. “It was a long day of tennis, which is physically fatiguing. These guys put forth a very solid effort today overall.”

Roncalli will head west for the Rapid City Invite Thursday through Saturday.
