Bulldogs grab team titles at Valley Queen Cheese meet

MILBANK – The Milbank Area Bulldogs turned in a superb performance at their home meet during the Valley Queen Cheese Invitational on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs won 11 events, including eight on the girls’ side, to capture both team titles. The Milbank girls finished with a team score of 185, while the boys totaled 144.5 points.

Aberdeen Roncalli earned three victories on the boys’ side. Jayden Munroe claimed wins in the long jump and triple jump, while Garrett Griffin won the 3,200-meter run.

Roncalli coach Sarah Schafer was impressed with how the team performed despite the windy conditions.

“It was excellent to get out there and compete with some challenging teams,” Schafer said. “The wind was a surprise, but the athletes endured it with strength and grace. It really only made them tougher in the end.”

In the girls’ division, Milbank’s Jacy Dexter picked up wins in the 200-meter dash and pole vault, while teammates Zayda Townsend (400) and Bianca Berry (3,200) each captured one win. The Bulldog girls also won four relays, including the 400, 800, 1,600, and 3,200-meter relays.

Hamlin captured four first-place finishes, including two from Gracelyn Leiseth, who won the shot put and the discus, while teammates Kami Wadsworth (javelin) and Shayne Fritz (high jump) also earned wins.

Great Plains Lutheran also picked up wins in four girls’ events, including Halle Bauer earning first place in the 800 and 1,600. Sophie Kannas won the 100-meter dash, while Kyrie Roberts won the 300-meter hurdles.

Other girls’ winners included Groton’s Aspen Johnson in the long jump, Webster’s Elliott Steiner in the triple jump, and Clark-Willow Lake’s Sara Thonvold in the 100-meter hurdles. Clark-Willow Lake also won the Sprint Medley relay.

On the boys’ side, Warner and Webster each won four events. The Monarchs picked up individual wins in the 100-meter dash (Zachary Wood) and the 110-meter hurdles (Hunter Cramer), as well as winning the 400-meter and 800-meter relays. Webster had four individual winners, including Jeron McCreary in the 300-meter hurdles, Matthew Mount in the shot put, Jaiden McCreary in the high jump, and Drew Reetz in the pole vault.

Milbank earned three victories, which included the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relays, as well as Payton Brown winning the 1,600-meter run. Hamlin also won three events, with Zac VanMeeteren winning the 200-meter dash, Kaden St. Pierre winning the discus, and Cristhian Rodriguez capturing a win in the javelin event.

Other winners included Tri-State’s Kaleb Foltz in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run, while Clark-Willow Lake won the Sprint Medley relay.
