Aberdeen Roncalli won a super-tiebreaker and a pair of tiebreakers on the way to recording a 9-0 tennis victory over Milbank Area at the Northern State Courts on Tuesday.
“It was definitely a good all-around team win. I was happy with the way everyone played,” said Roncalli coach JD Carrels.
Cason Hellwig won a 10-3 super breaker at number two singles, and then teamed with Jackson Henrich to win a pair of tiebreakers at number two doubles.
“The couple of close matches that we had at two singles and then at two doubles when we had our two tiebreakers, those are the ones you really look at,” Carrels said. “Because in tiebreakers it doesn’t really matter how your opponents have played in other matches or what their records are, every point is so critical. It can go either way.”
Hellwig is no stranger to tight matches so far this spring.
“He’s kind of been my king of tiebreakers this season,” Carrels said. “He’s pulled out most of them. I’m super happy to see that.”
Roncalli also picked up a close win at number one doubles where Gray Imbery and Mason Carrels stopped their opponents 6-3, 7-5, rallying from down 4-5 in the second set.
“Super happy with the way they played,” Coach Carrels said. “This is Mason’s first-year playing tennis. You can see the improvement from the beginning of the season. He’s really started to find his strokes. He’s really becoming a well-rounded doubles player. Him and Gray are definitely starting to find their groove.”
Roncalli and Sioux Falls Roosevelt played doubles before the rain stopped play. That dual will not be made up. Imbery and Carrels won their doubles match against the Riders.
“Each doubles match was very competitive. We got a great win at number one doubles,” Coach Carrels said. “Gray and Mason are getting more comfortable playing together, and it shows in their results.”
Roncalli now plays in Rapid City Thursday through Friday. The Cavaliers will play Rapid City Stevens and Rapid City Christian on Thursday and Mitchell on Friday before the singles and doubles tournament.
“You get a lot of tennis, playing three duals, plus our kids get their first experience in tournament style play,” Coach Carrels said. “Also, a big thing for our kids is the weather looks sunny. We haven’t played in much sun this season. It will be a big change to see how our kids play when they’re not in jackets and sweats and coats and gloves and stuff like that.”
