SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central turned in numerous top finishes at the O’Gorman Invite on Friday.

On the girls’ side, Taryn Nieman was Central’s lone champion, winning the shot put with a throw of 36-feet, 6-inches, a personal best. The Golden Eagles had six runner-up finishes, which included Claire Schaunaman (100-meter dash), Juna Ramey (1,600-meter run), Rakyrah Wallace (300-meter hurdles), and Ciara Frank (100-meter hurdles). Central also finished runner-up in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relays.

“We just had a good day overall,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl. “The hurdlers I thought ran really well. Our distance runners ran well. Our field events, we had a bunch of kids place over there as well. So that was good.”

Clark-Willow Lake won four events, including wins in the 400, 1,600, and sprint medley relays. The Cyclones’ Musonda Kabwe also won the 200-meter dash. Hamlin’s Gracelyn Leiseth won the discus with a throw of 163-feet, 9-inches, while teammate Kami Wadsworth finished runner-up with a throw of 134 feet, three inches. Ipswich’s Gracie Lange won the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 2-inches.

On the boys’ side, Central’s Tyler Bain captured the high jump title with a leap of 6-feet, 2-inches, while teammate Brendan Phillips finished in fifth place. The Golden Eagles also won a pair of relays (1,600 and 3,200).

“I think probably the two highlights of the day were our two young high jumpers, Brendan Phillips going six foot and then Tyler Bain going 6’2” in the high jump,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “I thought our 4×4 over at O’Gorman really competed hard. (They) did a really nice job of putting a time together. Our 4×8 ran pretty well.”

Murley said the warm weather has contributed to the improved times.

“We’re starting to see some warm weather, and our times are dropping,” Murley said. “It was all across the board today, just times starting to fall. Good weather just kind of makes that happen.”
