BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Central tennis squad turned a rainy-day forecast into a pair of wins Saturday in Brookings.
The Golden Eagles claimed wins over Brookings (8-1) and Huron (7-2) and recorded a near-miss against Yankton, falling 5-4 to round out a quad meet in Brookings.
“I can’t believe we were able to play,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz, who said a week’s worth of rain in the forecast evaporated by Saturday morning. There was one small delay about an hour into the day, but it had little effect on the remainder of the action.
Central began the day with an 8-1 win over Brookings and carried that momentum into the Golden Eagles’ match against Yankton. And despite the overall loss, Kurtz was pleased with his team’s performance against the Bucks.

“Coming in, they were one of the favorites for the ESD championship next week,” Kurt said. “We played really well.”
Central’s Mitchell Hofer claimed a 10-4 win at No. 1 singles in that Yankton match, defeating Zachary Briggs, who will likely be the number one seed in next week’s Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament. Hofer went undefeated in singles play.
“Just proves (Hofer) can play with and beat anybody in the conference,” Kurtz said.
Following the loss to Yankton, Central bounced back with a win over Huron to close out the day.
“This was the first time we’ve played a quad,” Kurtz said. “I was a little worried about our conditioning, but our guys played really well.”
Jack Riggs went 3-0 at No. 4 singles and teamed with Sekou Gogue at No. 2 doubles for three victories.
“We had a lot of big wins and victories that will help us move up a spot seed-wise for the tournament,” Kurtz said.
The Golden Eagles and the rest of the ESD will learn conference tournament seedings today before heading to Mitchell for tournament action Tuesday.
“Hopefully we’re primed for a good day on Tuesday,” Kurtz said.
