Ipswich defends LRC titles; La Croix, Stoll each part of four wins

IPSWICH – It was business as usual for the Ipswich track and field teams, and a memorable day for a pair of athletes during the Lake Region Conference meet on Tuesday.

Ipswich swept the LRC team championships for the sixth consecutive season. The Tigers have won every single girls’ crown since joining the conference in 2006.

Meanwhile, Aberdeen Christian’s Shawnteah La Croix and Faulkton’s Daniel Stoll each were part of four victories on the day.

Warner was runner-up in girls’ team points, while Frederick was second to Ipswich in the boys’ division.

Trevor Heinz helped lead the Tigers to a whopping 224 team points by winning the long jump and the 100-meter dash.

“We’ve been putting in a lot of work,” Heinz said, “really getting our base and volume phase done so we can actually perform well now.”

Heinz said that Ipswich coach Todd Thorson is the individual responsible for setting the tone when it comes to the LRC meet.

“Thorson’s definitely the heart of that,” Heinz said. “He makes it a conscious team effort to have that mindset that this is our home field and we don’t lose here.”

The Tigers finished runner-up at the state meet last season and are gearing up for another run at the state title in two weeks.

“The main goal is to win the state title obviously. We were really close last year and had some good competition,” Heinz said. “This year we’ve got some good competition again with Gregory and Viborg, so just try and push our potential, and peak at the right time and see what we can accomplish.”

La Croix continues to have a big spring for the Knights. The freshman won the 100 and 200, and helped to power victories for the 400-meter and 800-meter relay squads.

“I kind of like the relays better because you can run together with your team,” La Croix said. “It’s fun and it’s good to see how everyone works together for the relay. In the hundred, you’re standing there by yourself.”

Ali Isakson and Lauren Meyers also ran on both of those winning relay teams.

So what goes through La Croix’s mind as she watches her teammates while waiting for the baton for her anchor leg on the 800 relay?

“I honestly don’t watch them,” La Croix said, “otherwise I get really nervous.”

La Croix won the 200-meter dash in a time of :26.40. She is pleased with how her season has gone so far.

“Last year I didn’t even get a 26 time until state,” La Croix said. “This year I started getting them early, so I think I’m doing pretty good with that.”

Stoll also had a big day for the Trojans, winning the 200-meter dash and anchoring winning relay teams in the 400, 800 and 1,600. Roman DiMaria and Garrett Cramer also ran on all three of those squads.

Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern won two open events and also ran on a first-place relay team. The freshman won the 800 and 1,600 and ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay squad.

“I really try just to improve overall, but especially on the times,” Boekelheide said. “I have to keep improving my times, because throughout the season everybody is also improving theirs and that plays into me improving little things like pushing it harder certain laps or kicking it in sooner.”

Boekelheide, who used to enjoy the distance races more, is beginning to change her preference.

“I’ve grown to like the 800 more,” Boekelheide said. “Last year I liked more of the distance, just trying to gut it out, but now I like more of the quicker-pace races.”

And while she still glances at her watch, she also no longer checks it as frequently anymore when she competes.

“I’ve been trying to lean away from it, because I think I just run an overall better race,” Boekelheide said. “I can focus more on how I feel vs. my times.”

Leola’s Dustin Wurtz won the discus and finished second in the shot put. The sophomore is having a memorable spring after qualifying for state his freshman season.

“It just transferred on to this year. I got a lot stronger,” Wurtz said. “Form-wise I’ve gotten a lot better.”

Wurtz said there is a difference between throwing a discus and a shot put.

“Discus you can get away with being less explosive. If you’re quick then you’re fine,” Wurtz said. “With shot put, you can be slow and really explosive, and you can still perform at levels of other people.”

Wurtz is currently performing at levels higher than anyone else in the discus. He has the top mark in the state this spring for all of Class B. He said he doesn’t mind the pressure of being the state’s best thrower.

“I do feel a little bit pressure,” Wurtz said, “and I think it helps me get a little more amped up and gives me a little bit more boost to throw further.”

Faulkton’s Savanna Hayes was the only other double winner in open events, capturing the shot put and discus.

Aberdeen Christian, which finished sixth in both divisions of team points, also received a victory from Abe Kretchman in the triple jump. The senior also finished second in the long jump.

The Knights will now compete in the Region 1B meet next Thursday in Britton.
