May advances to semis, Roncalli sixth after day one of state tennis

SIOUX FALLS - Aberdeen Roncalli's Gannon May advanced to the semifinals at flight three singles, and the Cavaliers are sitting in sixth place in the team standings after the opening day of the Class A State Tennis Tournament on Monday. May received a bye and then secured a straight set win over an opponent from Huron in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Sawyer Henrich won his first round match at flight four before falling in his next match. All three of Roncalli's doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals before coming up short. At flight two, Cason Hellwig and Henrich won a straight set match, while the tandem of Jayden Reecy and Jacob Bellefeuille won a super tiebreaker 11-9 at flight three. The Cavaliers were involved in four matches that featured tiebreakers on the day. "We knew there would be some challenging matchups," said Roncalli coach Paige Hermanson.
