SIOUX FALLS – It was not, as it turns out, Aberdeen Central’s best day during the opening rounds of the Class AA state tennis tournament, which opened Thursday in Sioux Falls.

“It was one of those days,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “Things just didn’t go our way.”

The Golden Eagles struggled in close matches throughout the day, falling twice (out of three opportunities) in a tiebreaker and missing on several deuce points across the board.

Kurtz noted the majority of his squad landed in the middle of the pack in terms of seeding, playing in the 8 vs. 9 or the 7 vs. 10 matches.

“Those are kind of coin tosses,” Kurtz said, “and we went 1-6 in those. … Those matches come down to just a few points, and we weren’t able to win big points all day.”

Central’s No. 3 doubles team of Preston Kreber and Sam Casper did notch an opening round win over Sioux Falls Jefferson and will have a chance to play for the consolation championship when play resumes Friday.

Hunter Miller also claimed a statement victory at No. 6 singles, defeating Yankton’s Ethan Marsh in the team’s lone tiebreaker victory of the day.

“I wasn’t at that match,” Kurtz said, “but Coach (John) Vogel said it was the best he’s seen him play, so I’m happy for that.”

Mitchell Hofer also won his opening round contest, but dropped the next two. Elsewhere, however, the opening round did not favor the Golden Eagles. Still, Central has four of its six singles players still alive in the consolation rounds.

“We have some chances,” Kurtz said. “Once we lost that opening round, we did a good job of fighting back in consolations.”
