Mitchell had three of the top six golfers on the way to winning the Hub City Invitational golf tournament on Thursday at Moccasin Creek Country Club. The Kernels shot a 327 and O’Gorman had a 333. Aberdeen Central, led by a runner-up round from Danielle Podoll, finished third in team points with 351.
Shannon McCormick of O’Gorman was the medalist with a 72. Podoll was second with a 76.
“I think the one thing that we’ve shown throughout our four meets so far is consistency,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “Right around that 350 range. We’ll take that. We’re just going to continue to build off our scores we’ve shown so far.”
Central was once again without Haley Wirebaugh because of an injury.
“If we can be in that 350 range without one of our leaders, we’ll take that,” Zimmerman said.
The Golden Eagles were led by Podoll, the lone senior, for the fourth straight event.
“Again, I cannot emphasize that enough, with her being a senior just going out and showing the leadership that she has so far,” Zimmerman said. “It’s what you want from your seniors, but you don’t always get it all the time. There’s going to be bumps in the road like she had today, but she overcame those things. She ended up with a real good score for the most part.”
Podoll had a 39 on the front and a 37 on the back.
“It started off a little rocky. I really didn’t have my swing down, but I kept my head in the game,” Podoll said. “I kept my mental state OK and then it kind of got better from there. The front nine was all right, and then the back nine I kind of got it together and finished it off strong.”
The event marked the only home meet of the year for the Eagles.
“I like playing at home. You know the course like the back of your hand,” Podoll said. “It makes it a lot easier and it’s more comfortable playing here.”
Podoll was pleased with her total, despite getting off to a rough start.
“There’s definitely a few shots I could have taken back and I wish I could redo,” she said, “but I guess no one is going to have a perfect round of golf. I would take this score pretty much any day.”
Central has played in four tournaments in the past seven days. They will now get a break before playing in Huron Thursday and in Yankton next Friday.
“The one thing that I think all coaches will probably say this time of the year is we need to get in practices,” Zimmerman said. “We’ve been going to a few meets now and kind of seeing where we’re at, but I have a whole list of things that I really want to work on that I haven’t gotten to.”
Team Points: Mitchell 327, O’Gorman 333, Aberdeen Central 351, Pierre 365, Huron 388, Watertown 396.
