FAULKTON – Faulkton swept its way to the team titles during its own golf invitational on Thursday. The Trojans won the girls’ crown by two strokes over Miller. Faulkton won the boys’ title by six strokes over Ipswich.
Jayce Pugh of Miller was the girls’ medalist with an 85. Taylor Machtemes of Faulkton was runner-up with an 88.
Wyatt Larson of McIntosh was the boys’ medalist with a 73. Bennett Cassens of Faulkton was second with a 74, and Luke Peterson of Ipswich third with a 75.
Aberdeen Christian was sixth in team points, led by Jett Becker who was fifth with an 81. Zeke Becker was 14th with a 90.
“I thought our guys did pretty well,” said Christian coach David Rohrbach. “It’s a little different course in the sense that there were no par 5s. You play the same nine holes twice. It almost in a way I think hurts, because the par 5s typically are kind your birdie opportunities. I thought the guys did all right. Like any tournament they said they left some shots out there.”
Rohrbach said both golfers are off to a good start this spring, but are looking to lower their scores.
“They’re golfing solid,” he said. “but there’s always room for improvement.”
The Knights will compete in the Lake Region Conference tournament Thursday at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Aberdeen.
While Christian does not practice there, the Knights are not strangers to the course, either.
“It’s always good to play in town on a course that you’re somewhat familiar with,” Rohrbach said. “The guys have played it before.”
The competition will be much like it was in Faulkton.
“Two of the top three kids at today’s meet will be at that one,” Rohrbach said.
