A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of June 25-July 1:

Last year on June 27, 2022: USD has landed quarterback Todd Drummond, who will be a high school senior at Pawhuska (OK) this fall. He is the son of veteran TV food show host Ree “The Pioneer Woman” Drummond. Todd’s commitment created national headlines when Ree Drummond, who has a new partner in Walmart, shared the news will her millions of followers on her social media accounts.

10 years ago on June 27, 2013: South Dakota State point guard Nate Wolters was the 38th overall pick in the NBA draft, becoming the first South Dakota college player selected in 30 years and the first ever taken in the top 40. Colorado State’s Colton Iverson, a 2008 Yankton graduate, was the 53rd pick, also in the second round. Earlier in the month, Iverson’s high school classmate Layne Somsen was selected in the
Major League Baseball draft. Both Iverson and Somsen were born in Aberdeen.

20 years ago on June 27, 2003: WNBA all-star guard Becky Hammon of the New York Liberty suffered a season-ending injury in a game against Detroit. The former Rapid City Stevens standout, who was averaging 16.2 points per game, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.

30 years ago on June 28, 1993: Oakes High School and NDSU graduate Phil Hansen, who is now bench pressing 420 pounds, is set to make $1 million this coming season, his third in the NFL and with the Buffalo Bills. The rising star told reporters, “I can’t complain about what I’m making, especially when I talk to friends back home.”

40 years ago on June 25, 1983: Kevin Miller came within one batter of throwing a perfect game for Madison in the Broncos’ eight-inning 10-0 win over Canistota. Miller, who pitched for Northern State last spring, retired the first 23 batters before Brett Fligge singled. Miller struck out the next batter to end the game.

50 years ago on June 28, 1973: Terri Seymour of Northwestern won six events (100, 220, 440, hurdles, long jump and high jump) at a summer track meet in Aberdeen.
