While the weather was a bit on the cool side, the racing was far from it on the racetrack at the Brown County Speedway on Friday night.

Maria Broksieck took home the victory in the Street Stock division. The Goodwin driver said it felt good to get the win and was grateful for the way her car performed.

“The car was great,” Broksieck said. “Couldn’t have asked for it to be any better.”

Broksieck said the track became a one lane affair for much of the race.

“The track was pretty slimy on the bottom which made for pretty (much) one lane on the top, but it was definitely usable when you needed to be down there,” Broksieck said.

Broksieck had to navigate through several caution flags throughout the race before finally finishing in first place.

“You just have to be able to drive in front of your car and watch everyone else and see when the wrecks are going to happen and just avoid them as much as you can,” Broksieck said.

While the weather was gloomy and chilly due to rain that had fallen just hours before the racing night began, Broksieck was thankful for the opportunity to race on Friday.

“Driving here I did not think we’d be racing tonight,” Broksieck said. “But the cool weather is absolutely welcomed every night that we race.”

Huron’s Adam Brotherton captured the win in the Midwest Mods division. Brotherton was pleased with how his car performed, calling it a “rocket ship.”

“It’s been on rails here lately, so nothing to complain about that’s for sure,” Brotherton said.

Brotherton was also pleased with the track on Friday.

“It was awesome. Nice and smooth,” Brotherton said. “Kinda one lane on one and two but overall, it was pretty good to me, I guess. Nice and smooth, that’s all I care about.”

Brotherton said he will take the win any time he can get it.

“It feels pretty good. Nice cool night. Not too hot, so I’ll take that,” Brotherton said. “Can’t wait ‘til next week.”

Garrett Gross of Aberdeen said he was “stoked” to be the winner in the Modified division, and for good reason.

“First time. It’s amazing,” Gross said.

For Gross to get the win, he needed to hold off several other racers, including Aberdeen’s Kent Arment, but was able to narrowly escape with the victory.

“I heard his motor coming and coming and he got beside me on one of the last laps and I was like ‘Oh geez, I’ve got to get around this lap traffic,’ so I dived underneath, made the move on him and got in front of him, and held Kent off. I don’t know how, but it’s exciting,” Gross said.

Gross said his strategy was to be on the top of the track throughout the race, which proved to be the winning formula.

“I like running the top. I’m not too much of a bottom guy,” Gross said. “The tires get in my way pretty good, but I like ripping the lip on the top, so that was a lot of fun.”

Gross said his car was tight during the heat race, but was able to open it up during the feature.

“I was surprised. In the heat race I was a little tight, but I think it helped out in the feature around the top,” Gross said. “I could just run it right around there with no problem, just send her in hard, and didn’t even have to even do anything. Just hold on.”

Trevor Nelson of Warner was able to earn the win in the Super Stock feature. Nelson said while he has not raced in Aberdeen too often, he was glad to pick up the win.

“It feels good. This is only our third race here this year,” Nelson said. “We’ve been traveling in Minnesota and being successful there and came back for double features and at least we finished in both.”

Nelson was thankful for all who helped him get his car ready for the race.

“The car’s been good,” Nelson said. “It’s been good all year. I just can’t thank my dad, my girlfriend Brittany, everybody at Affordable Chassis, everyone that helps on this thing. It’s a long process, a lot of hours, a lot of work, especially double feature nights.”

Nelson finished fifth in the makeup feature and said the track was good throughout the night.

“Makeup feature that’s just what you get early. Kind of hard to pass,” Nelson said. “The feature was really great, top, bottom, middle. It was a really fun, really clean race there for the longest part.”

Jeremy North of Huron captured the win in the Super Stock makeup feature.

In the final feature of the night, Watertown’s Morgan Ward Grosz picked up the Late Model win.

Grosz said the feeling of being a winner had not sunk in after the race.

“It hasn’t hit me yet. I’m trying to tell myself that it wasn’t a heat race win,” Grosz said. “That was actually a win in the Late Model for my first one, so I’m still in la la land.”

Grosz was appreciative of her crew for getting the car prepared for the racetrack on Friday.

“I don’t have words for it besides thank you to my crew and my dad,” Grosz said. “They made this car go from night to day in one week and obviously I could tell.”

Grosz had to hold off several contenders to earn the win, and had to think through her strategy throughout the race.

“I just had to remember who was in front of me and they’re clean drivers,” Grosz said. “I have to show the respect that they give to me, so I knew if I put my nose in there, they weren’t going to dirty me. I just said go for it and I did on that last restart and my car stuck.”

After the win, Grosz now hopes to carry her momentum into next week.

“My confidence level is big right now going into next week with the Rumble. I’m excited to come back and hopefully stay on this high to see if I can actually make the Rumble,” Grosz said. “Depending on weather this week, we’re going have a good race next week, so I’m excited.”
