A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 9-15:

Last year on July 14, 2022: Named as one of the 10 greatest players in Sioux Falls Storm history was Aberdeen native Cory Johnsen. The Central graduate is the team’s sack leader (64.5) who helped the Storm win eight championships and is now an assistant coach with the team that started its indoor football league franchise in 1999.

10 years ago on July 9, 2013: Two South Dakota cowboys, Jake Rinehart of Highmore and Chad Ferley of Oelrichs, were among 62 pros who earned more than $10,000 during the Fourth of July week. With 32 rodeos and $3.3 million in total prize money, the week is known as the Cowboy Christmas.

20 years ago on July 9, 2003: Ashley Kaufman of Clark won the South Dakota Golf Association State Junior Championship for girls ages 14-15 in Yankton.

30 years ago on July 11, 1993: After entering the final round three shots off the lead, Onida native Tom Byrum finished eighth in the PGA’s Anheuser-Busch Classic in Virginia and earned $28,600. Byrum shot a 274 while winner Jim Gallagher Jr. shot a 269.

40 years ago on July 15, 1983: Scott Boekelheide of Northwestern qualified for the national Hershey track meet in Hershey, PA. He qualified in the 100 meters in the boys’ 9-10 division.

50 years ago on July 14, 1973: Winning their divisions at the seventh annual International Open Wrestling Tournament in Mexico City were Kermit Opp of Aberdeen at 136 pounds, Steve Heller of Faulkton at 148 pounds and Stan Opp of Aberdeen/SDSU at 126 pounds. Placing third at 105 pounds was John Schiley of Webster.
