Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 16-22:

Last year on July 20, 2022: SDSU had the best team cumulative grade point average (3.837) in the nation in 2021-22 among NCAA Division I women’s basketball teams. Paiton Burckhard of Aberdeen Central helped the Jacks win the WNIT national title last season and she will be a senior this season.

10 years ago on July 18, 2013: South Dakota United FC Barcelona U17 became the first boys’ team in state history to not only qualify but win a U.S. Club Soccer national tourney.

20 years ago on July 19, 2003: Patty Coddington of Sioux Falls won her second Pre-Senior state title in the last three years at the South Dakota Golf Association’s Women’s Stroke Play Championship. Finishing second was defending champion Heidi Ruch of Aberdeen.

30 years ago on July 16, 1993: Mitchell native K.L. Kool has been named the director of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

40 years ago on July 21, 1983: Kris Tschetter of Sioux Falls won the state women’s golf championship in Rapid City. Four days ago in Watertown, her brother, Mike Tschetter, won the men’s match play state championship. It marked the first time in state history that a brother and sister won major state amateur golf titles in the same year. The closest any sibling combo had come to that feat was the Comstocks of Sioux Falls when Jeanne won the state women’s title in 1961 and brother Byron won the state men’s
stroke play title in 1962.

50 years ago on July 21, 1973: The San Diego Chargers cut their NFL roster down to 70 players. Among those surviving the cuts was former Hayti and Dakota Wesleyan standout Terry Shelsta.
