Central wins two of three duals against Sioux Falls squads

SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Central girls’ tennis program claimed two out of three matches Friday on Day 1 of the Sioux Falls Invitational, the lone set-back being a wind-swept 5-4 loss to Sioux Falls Jefferson.

The Golden Eagles sandwiched that loss with a 9-0 win over Sioux Falls Washington to begin the day and a 6-3 victory over O’Gorman to end it.

“I’m very proud of my team,” said Central coach John Vogel. “(Friday) is a very tough day, and they showed they’re a class act.”

After opening with a sweep of a visibly improved Warrior team, Vogel said his squad headed into the teeth of the day – a windy contest on Jefferson’s courts.

“We have some bad wind in the spring with the boys,” Vogel said. “But this was the windiest match I’ve ever been a part of. … I had one hand on my head the whole day, holding my hat on.”

Still, the Golden Eagles held their own, splitting the singles matches and coming within a tie-breaker in doubles action of claiming the overall win.

And if that weren’t enough, the Golden Eagles mustered enough competitive juices to cap the day with their first win over O’Gorman since Vogel’s involvement with the program.

“That was fantastic,” Vogel said. “We really needed to win that (O’Gorman) match. … Everyone who had a close match ended up winning.”

That included a tiebreaker win from Reese Comstock at No. 5 singles, and some close sets from Livia Douglas (No. 4 singles) and Riley O’Keefe (No. 6 singles). Douglas and Laney Gonsor also pulled off a close win at No. 2 doubles.

Vogel also pointed out the efforts of Julia Knie at No. 1 singles. While Knie did not win either of her two matches, Vogel said, she did make it difficult on her opponents.

Knie, in fact, took the state’s defending top-flight singles champion, Avery Summers of Jefferson, down to the wire, as the two were the final players to exit the court during that match.

“She made them work like crazy,” Vogel said.

Central will resume play this morning against Sioux Falls Roosevelt, then cap off its five-match weekend against Sioux Falls Lincoln.
