BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Central girls’ tennis program split a pair of matches to cap off a five-match weekend at the Brookings Jamboree Saturday. The Golden Eagles swept Huron 9-0 before falling 5-4 to Watertown.

Despite the lopsided team score in the Huron match, several individual contests ended up being quite close, including a battle at No. 2 doubles where Laney Gonsor and Livia Douglas were victorious after storming back to force a tiebreaker.

“I guess it took them a while to wake up, as they were trailing 9-6 before coming back,” said Central coach John Vogel.

Douglas also had a battle at No. 4 singles, winning 10-7, while Avery Tennant won by a 10-8 score at No. 2 singles.

The close ones didn’t always bounce Central’s way in the Watertown dual, however. Julia Knie dropped a tiebreaker set at top-flight singles.

“Watertown is always a close match-up for us,” Vogel said. “I’m really proud of Julia Knie at flight one singles. She was down but battled back to force a breaker. She didn’t win, but it was good to see her compete.”

Knie was on the cutting end of a doubles loss, as well, as Watertown claimed a 10-8 decision in that No. 1 doubles match.

“I was really happy with how we played (in doubles),” Vogel said. “We almost took them all, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.”

Central will be back in action Saturday, taking part in the Huron Quad. Due to construction at the Huron courts, that event will take place in Mitchell.
