MILBANK – Aberdeen Roncalli got its second look at both Lennox and Milbank Area in tennis action on Monday and both were repeat results. The Cavaliers fell to Lennox 7-2 and defeated the Bulldogs 8-1.

Roncalli wasn’t quite as sharp against Lennox as their first encounter which was a 5-4 setback.

“We came out kind of flat against Lennox in most of our matches and the scores definitely showed that,” said Roncalli coach JD Carrels. “Lennox is a good team. They took advantage of that and just kind of kept the momentum going.”

Mason Carrels won a tight match at number four singles, pulling out the second set 7-5.

“When they played the first time, Mason actually won in a super tiebreaker. Coming into this one he was well aware that it was going to be a close match,” Coach Carrels said. “He was down 2-0 in seemed like the first minute. Those first two games went super quick and then he kind of found his groove.”

Palmer Johnson defeated his foe from Lennox for the third time this season. The first time was in a dual in Huron and the second time was in the championship of the Governor Invitational last Saturday in Pierre.

“You always hear this saying it’s tough to be someone three times,” Coach Carrels said. “Each match he’s played he’s gotten better and better results. I was super happy to see that.”

Roncalli lost just one match against Milbank Area. Coach Carrels noted that the doubles team of Cason Hellwig and Jackson Henrich won in a super breaker the first time and won in straight sets this time.

“They came out and played extremely well,” Coach Carrels said.

He also pointed out the play of Hellwig at number two singles.

“Cason actually won his match 7-6, 7-6, the first time. He came out and won 6-1, 6-0,” Coach Carrels said. “I was super happy with his performance today. He was light on his feet. He was always on his toes.”

The Cavaliers are now off until the Class A state tournament next week in Sioux Falls. Carrels said the week ahead will be spent working on specific facets of the game.

“It’s going to be a lot of fine tuning, working with particular players in certain areas. I know each specific player needs to work on specific things in their game,” he said. “We’ll gear practice towards each of those individual things. but then each doubles team has their own little things that need to be worked on, so we’ll divide that a little bit.”
