The high school volleyball region playoffs are set to begin this week as area teams in Class A will look to make a run at the state tournament in the coming weeks. The top two teams from each region will advance to SoDak 16 action on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

This year’s Class A state tournament will be in Rapid City November 16-18.

Here is a look at three regions in the area:

Region 1A at Groton and Aberdeen Roncalli

The Groton Tigers edged Aberdeen Roncalli for the top seed in Region 1A. The Tigers earned a pair of impressive wins late in the season over Class B opponents Northwestern and Faulkton. Groton has won 11 consecutive matches and has not lost since dropping back-to-back contests against Florence-Henry and Warner in mid-September. The Tigers will host Waubay-Summit in the opening round on Tuesday.

Aberdeen Roncalli is the second seed and is looking to return for the Class A state tournament for the first time since 2018. After dropping their first match, the Cavaliers rattled off nine straight wins before finishing the season on a 9-4 run. Roncalli dropped a couple of late-season matches to Miller and Faulkton before ending the regular season with wins over Milbank Area and Deuel.

Milbank Area has been up and down this season, but will look to make a deep postseason run. The Bulldogs play a rematch against Webster in the opening round. Milbank defeated the Bearcats last Tuesday in straight sets, and should the Bulldogs win, could face a rematch with Aberdeen Roncalli in the following round. The Cavaliers defeated the Bulldogs in four sets on Oct. 17.

The Chargers have been on a winning streak as of late, winning their last nine contests, with the last seven being in straight sets. Hamlin’s last win was against Clark-Willow Lake in the season finale, and the two could match up again in the quarterfinal round.

Florence-Henry is the fifth seed and will play Flandreau in the quarterfinal round. The Falcons are led by several seniors, and should they get past the Fliers, could match up with Hamlin in the SoDak 16 qualifying round. The Falcons and Chargers played twice this season, with Florence-Henry winning the early season match in three sets, while Hamlin won the late season match in four sets.

Estelline-Hendricks is the second seed and has won 24 matches on the season, five more than any other team in this region.

Region 6A at higher seeds

Miller enters as the top seed in Region 6A and will host McLaughlin in the opening round. After a slow 3-2 start to the season, the Rustlers have finished strong, winning six of their last seven matches, including avenging an early season loss to Aberdeen Roncalli. Four of Miller’s six losses have come against Wolsey-Wessington and Warner. The Rustlers have gotten stronger as the season has progressed and now have the experience to make a repeat trip to the state tournament.

Mobridge-Pollock is the second seed entering region play and will host Crow Creek in the first round. The Tigers began the season 12-0 before dropping a match to Miller. In their last five matches, Mobridge-Pollock went 2-3, dropping matches to Milbank Area, Linton-Hazleton-Moffit-Braddock, N.D., and Warner. Despite the late-season struggle, the Tigers have the talent to make a deep postseason run.

North Central enters the region tournament as the fifth seed and will look to spoil their opponent’s postseason runs, beginning with fourth-seeded Dupree.
