A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4:

Last year on Oct. 29, 2022: The NSU football team defeated Moorhead 35-7, holding the Dragons to a school-record minus 88 yards rushing. NSU defensive lineman Ian Marshall had 3.5 of the Wolves’ eight sacks in the game, bringing his season total to 13.5. He also had five tackles and a fumble recovery while teammate Felipe Alvear had six tackles.

10 years ago on Oct. 29, 2013: Wicked snowstorms forced the Wall High School football team to play four games in 12 days. The Eagles responded with four wins on Oct. 18 (beat Philip 31-6); Oct. 21 (beat New Underwood 47-26); Oct. 24 (beat Stanley County 49-8); Oct. 29 (beat Faith 34-0 in first round of playoffs).

20 years ago on Nov. 1, 2003: Respected veteran South Dakota sports journalist Ron Wood, 66, died at his Rapid City home. Wood worked for the Rapid City Journal for 40 years, and the Mitchell Daily Republic for three years before that. Wood was born in Faith and graduated from Rapid City Central and Dakota Wesleyan.

30 years ago on Oct. 31, 1993: Adam Vinatieri was five for five on PAT kicks to help SDSU defeat Augustana 35-25 before 6,424 fans in Brookings.

40 years ago on Oct. 29, 1983: Sophomore quarterback Dale Lowinske ran for one touchdown and threw five TDs to Don Hawkinson as Hoven defeated Bowdle-Java 42-20. Lowinske had TD passes of 6, 25, 20, 25 and 39 yards to Hawkinson.

50 years ago on Nov. 2-3, 1973: The Northern State football team went on the road to defeat South Dakota-Springfield 61-12 on Friday afternoon. The Wolves got big-play touchdowns from Randy Sutton (75-yard punt return) and Greg Saunders (52-yard pass from Steve Graf). Less than 24 hours later, Mankato (7-3) hosted the Wolves (7-2) and defeated Northern 35-6. Roger Day scored the Wolves’ lone TD.
