
A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Nov. 19-25:
Last year on Nov. 25, 2022: Career nights by two Wolves led NSU past Texas A&M-Kingsville 95-88 in men’s basketball. Roncalli graduate Gus Reede scored a career-high 31 points while Jordan Belka scored 20 to become the 59th member of the NSU 1,000-point club. The next night on Nov. 26, Reede helped the 5-2 Wolves defeat Presentation College 101-59, ending a weekend where he made 12 of his 15 three-point attempts.
10 years ago on Nov. 24, 2013: Vermillion native and Nebraska wrestling coach Mark Manning picked up his 200th career win in his home state when his 11th rated Cornhuskers defeated South Dakota State 36-6 in Brookings. Picking up pins for Nebraska were Wagner native Robert Kokesh (174 pounds) and Mobridge native Collin Jensen (285).
20 years ago on Nov. 22, 2003: Senior Aubrey Baxter and sophomore Jordan Schaffer led coach Brenda Stover’s Redfield (35-4) volleyball team to the State A title over Sioux Falls Christian. Meanwhile, sisters Tara and Teri Smith helped coach Nora Groft’s Northwestern (37-2) team defeat Andes Central for the State B title.
30 years ago on Nov. 19, 1993: Warner senior Chuck Welke Jr. announced he will play basketball at USD next season. Welke averaged 29.8 points and 14.9 rebounds per game last season to lead Warner to the State B title. Welke, who averaged 25.2 ppg as a sophomore and 19.8 as a freshman, and his Monarch teammates have gone 65-8 in the last three seasons.
40 years ago on Nov. 25, 1983: Officials picked for the Dec. 1-3 State B Girls’ Basketball Tournament in Mitchell include Buzz Hortness of Webster and Al Sime of Britton. Refs picked for the Dec. 8-10 State A in Watertown include Duane Donat of Aberdeen and Webster native Clyde Hagen of Sioux Falls.
50 years ago on Nov. 24, 1973: Aberdeen Roncalli defeated Watertown 66-42 in boys’ basketball as Cary Hornaman and Kent Clausen combined for 35 points for the winners.
