A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 10-16:
Last year on Dec. 10, 2022: Pro barrel racer Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs ended up fourth in the 2022 world standings as she earned $199.566.48 this season, only about $37,000 less than world champion Hailey Kinsel of Cotulla, TX. This season marked Lockhart’s 16th straight qualification for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Earlier this season, she also passed $3 million in career earnings, making her only the second competitor (Sherry Cervi) in women’s pro history to eclipse the milestone.
10 years ago on Dec. 14, 2013: Pro saddle bronc rider Chad Ferley of Oelrichs won his second world title (2006) in Las Vegas. In the 85 years of naming a world saddle bronc world champion, South Dakota cowboys have won 27 percent (23) of those titles.
20 years ago on Dec. 16, 2003: Jesse Hyde, Blake Yackley, Lee Rausch and Brent Sutton combined for 60 points in Sully Buttes’ 68-59 win over Lyman in boys’ basketball.
30 years ago on Dec. 11, 1993: Aberdeen Roncalli slipped past Miller 78-72 in boys’ basketball. Alex Gese scored 25 for the Cavaliers while Troy Boomsma scored 24 for the Rustlers.
40 years ago on Dec. 11, 1983: Brothers Justin and Brett Rezatto had two of Aberdeen’s top performances at the 15th annual Pepsi Holiday Swim Classic in Sioux Falls.
50 years ago on Dec. 10, 1973: South Dakota produced two Division 1 football first-team All-American defensive tackles in three years. In 1971, Nebraska DT Larry Jacobson of Sioux Falls earned that honor. And this fall, Jacobson’s former teammate and Nebraska DT John Dutton of Rapid City earned first-team All-American honors as well. Nebraska weight room experts with decades of weight-lifting and body-building experience said the 6-foot-7, 262-pound Dutton has the strongest arms (150-pound curls) they have ever seen to go along with his 84-inch (or seven feet) arm span.
