MITCHELL – Aberdeen Central traded a decision and a fall for another decision and a fall, but came away with a 45-15 Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ wrestling win over Mitchell Thursday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles got a win from Avery Bendewald, who pinned her opponent at 107 pounds. Lilly Nelson then claimed a 10-4 decision at 165 pounds.
Mitchell countered with a see-saw battle win at 114 pounds, a match that Central’s Madyson Gillen nearly won, and a fall at 126 pounds.
Central then claimed forfeit victories at the remainder of the weight classes, save a double-forfeit at 185 pounds.
Central coach Jake Flakus said it was good to see his girls be competitive out of the holiday break.
“They wrestled well and aggressive,” he said. “You could tell it was Christmas break and we were a little out of it, but they still went out and wrestled hard.”
Flakus added that the match was a good rust-buster despite the number of open weight classes.
“I wish more of my girls could have had a match, but sometimes that’s the way it goes,” he said.
Central will be back in action next weekend at the Bismarck Rotary Tournament.
