SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central got the defensive stops it wanted, but couldn’t get its offense going Tuesday night in a 38-28 non-conference girls’ basketball road loss to Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

Central held Roosevelt under 40 points, a threshold that has netted the Golden Eagles a victory throughout the season. However, the 28 points scored was just one point shy of a season low.

“Holding a team to 38 is a pretty good defensive night,” said Central coach Mikayla Arechigo, “but our offensive rhythm never got established.”

That disjointedness, Arechigo noted, was due in part to a defensive scheme the Rough Riders tossed at the Golden Eagles.

“Roosevelt ran a 1-3-1 (zone defense), which they haven’t ran this season,” Arechigo said. “It seemed to throw our guards off a little bit and cause them to take some uncharacteristic shots early in the shot clock. The girls did a great job on the boards, but couldn’t get the put-backs to fall.”

Central led 12-9 after the opening quarter, but scored just three points in the fourth quarter, allowing the Rough Riders to pull away.

Lauryn Burckhard led the way for the Golden Eagles, finishing with 10 points, six of which came in the first quarter. Caydi Withers tallied eight points and Emma Dohrer finished with seven.

Central (9-10 on the year) has one game remaining in the regular season, a Friday home game against fourth-ranked Sioux Falls Jefferson. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Golden Eagles Arena.
