A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 25-March 2:

Last year on March 2, 2023: The Minnesota Vikings have hired Dalmin Gibson as a special teams assistant. Gibson was born in Rapid City and is a 2010 graduate of Harding County where he was a football, basketball and rodeo standout. He spent last season as an assistant for Southern Illinois and then Michigan State the two seasons before that. He also has coached at Colorado, Wayne State and Dickinson State (where he graduated in 2014 and played linebacker).

10 years ago on March 1, 2014: Aberdeen Central won its first state wrestling team title in program history. The Golden Eagles fielded their first varsity team in the fall of 1963. John Frisco was the state champ at 170 pounds for the Golden Eagles while teammates Mitchell Johnson (138), Tyson Mitzel (160), Cole Carlson (182), Dalton Cox (220) and Sam Schaunaman (heavyweight) were all state runners-up.

20 years ago on Feb. 28, 2004: With the USD pep band playing “Hit the Road, Jack” in front of 8,517 fans in Vermillion, many of them stormed the court after their Coyotes defeated the SDSU men’s basketball team 78-63. With SDSU leaving the North Central Conference for Division I next year, this was the last regular-season game between the two rivals for the foreseeable future in a 90-year series that began in 1914. Josh Mueller and Derek Paben lead the Coyotes with 18 each while Marquise Richardson scored 23 for the Jacks.

30 years ago on March 2, 1994: Both NSU basketball teams advanced to the NAIA national tourney on their homecourt. The NSU women defeated Peru State 90-74. Nancy King scored 16 to pace the Wolves to their 28 th win in a row. The NSU men defeated Mount Marty 96-80 behind Lance Luitjens (22 points), Kevin Burckhard (16) and Paul Sather (15).

40 years ago on Feb. 28, 1984: On a 4-3 vote, the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s Board of Directors approved to expand prep basketball from two to three classes. Starting in the 1985-86 season, the state will have Class AA (16 largest high schools), A (next biggest 64 schools) and B (remainder of schools).

50 years ago on Feb. 25, 1974: At last weekend State A wrestling tournament, Rick Jensen of Watertown won a record fourth Class A title on Feb. 23. He ended his high school career with a 93-1 record and four titles. In the 132-pound. championship, Jensen defeated Kirk Simet of Pierre 5-3. Simet lost only five matches during the season, four to Jensen. Jensen was 24-0 as a freshman, 25-0 as a sophomore, 18-1 as a junior (losing only to Mike Stroup of Pierre), and 26-0 this season.
