Mikayla Arechigo has resigned her coaching positions at Aberdeen Central.

Arechigo, who served as head girls’ basketball coach as well an assistant cross country coach, wants to spend more time with her young family.

“After the cross country season, I was pretty exhausted from the travel,” Arechigo said, “and after the basketball season we had traveled about 4,200 miles.”

That meant many hours away from her family, which includes a 4-year-old and an 18-month-old.

“I just felt like I was missing out on a lot of time with my kids,” Arechigo said.

Arechigo was a multi-sport standout at Frederick and then at Northern State. She has been coaching two sports at Central for the past 11 years and was the head girls’ basketball coach for the past three seasons.

She noted that between practices, competitions and bus rides, it took a toll on family time.

“One of the first pieces of advice that I got when I started coaching was, don’t forget about the kids around your Thanksgiving table,” Arechigo said, “and I felt like I was missing out on a lot of time with my kids.”

Arechigo didn’t completely close the door on coaching in the future, but said if it happens, it will be when her children are much older. For now, she would like to sit with them at games instead of having them sit behind her on the sidelines.

“I’m definitely exited about bringing my kids to games,” Arechigo said. “It’s fun to be coaching and having them back there watching, but it’s going to be a lot of fun to be able to take them to games, and be able to sit down and help teach them the game.”

Arechigo said it is tough leaving the Golden Eagles, but knows the program is in a good position.

“It’s tough because I’m leaving such a good team for whoever decides to take it on next. There’s just such a good foundation there of great players,” Arechigo said. “That’s kind of tough, but it’s also exciting, because I know when I come and watch them play, it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch them have continued success.”
