Spring Coach of the Year winners announced

SIOUX FALLS – The South Dakota High School Coaches Association has announced its Coach of the Year recipients for spring sports.

A pair of local coaches were finalists for girls’ golf: Kim Zimmerman of Aberdeen Central and Eric Heath of Sisseton.

Coach of the Year winners for their respective sports and finalists include:

Boys’ Golf: Frank Cutler of Platte-Geddes. Finalists were Chris Caldwell of Chamberlain; Jeff Halseth of Sioux Falls Lincoln; Brooke McDonald of Chester Area; Corey Neale of Watertown; and Ivan Voss of Sioux Falls Christian.

Girls’ Golf: Jeffrey Johnson of Bison. Finalists were Mike Buseth of Deubrook Area; Eric Heath of Sisseton; Tom Jansa of Sioux Falls O’Gorman; Tyler Morgan of Sioux Falls Christian; and Kim Zimmerman of Aberdeen Central.

Boys’ Tennis: Kevin Plank of Lennox. Finalists were Tim Hedblom of Huron; Tom Krueger of Sioux Falls Lincoln; and Matt Termansen of Harrisburg.

Boys’ Track and Field: Tyler Payer of Hanson. Finalists were Jim Jarovski of Sioux Falls Lincoln; Luke Vander Leest of Sioux Falls Christian; and Jason Wagoner of Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

Girls’ Track and Field: Julie Preheim of Colman-Egan. Finalists were Blaine Bacon of Dell Rapids St. Mary; Janel Merkwan of West Central; and Aaron Strand of O’Gorman.

Last year’s winners were Rob Mendoza for boys’ golf, and John Vogel of Aberdeen Central for tennis. There were no winners for girls’ golf or boys’ and girls’ track and field due to COVID.

This year’s winners will be honored at the annual awards banquet on Sunday, June 20 in Rapid City.
