A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 14-20:

Last year on April 15, 2023: South Dakota native and Oklahoma sophomore Danielle Sievers helped the Sooners win their second national gymnastics title in a row. Sievers had one of the top scores in vault and floor, and she also competed on the bars for OU. Sievers, who is from Gary and a Deuel High School graduate, has already earned All-American and Big 12 champion honors during her career.

10 years ago on April 19, 2014: Ray Larson of Columbia and Scott Podoll of Aberdeen made holes-in-one within a half hour of each other at Moccasin Creek Country Club. Both men used a seven-iron and both aces occurred on hole number 13.

20 years ago on April 14, 2004: The best of turkey hunters dream about accomplishing a grand slam in their lifetimes. Earning that feat means the harvesting of the United States’ four subspecies of wild turkeys: Merriam’s, Rio Grande, Eastern and Florida. Some hunters might be surprised to learn that three of the four species can be found in Roberts County (Merriam’s, Rio Grande and Eastern). The National Wild Turkey Federation said the northeastern county (Sisseton is the county seat) in South Dakota is the only county in the U.S. where hunters can take three-fourths of the turkey grand slam all in one place.

30 years ago on April 16, 1994: Kevin Burckhard of Northern State led the South Dakota NAIA All-Stars past the South Dakota NCAA DII All-Stars 104-100 in Sioux Falls. Burckhard scored 29 points and was named the MVP of the college men’s basketball event.

40 years ago on April 14, 1984: St. Cloud athletic director Noel Olson will become the new commissioner of the North Central conference. He is the fourth full-time commissioner in the history of the 61 year-old conference: R.D. “Dewey” Halford (1977-84); Richard G. Koppenhaver (1970-77); and Jack McClelland (1968-70).

50 years ago on April 13, 1974: Northern State won three events at the 28th annual Corn Palace Relays in Mitchell. Al Kirschenmann won the shot put, Steve Schulte won the 100-yard dash and Schulte, Wayne Geary, Gordon Wibbens and Jerry McPartland won the 440-yard relay.
