A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of June 2-8:
Last year on June 3, 2023: In the first state-sanctioned high school fastpitch softball tournaments, the girls from Sioux Falls Lincoln (AA), West Central (A) and Castlewood (B) won state titles in Aberdeen. The state tourney will return to Aberdeen next year.
10 years ago on June 6, 2014: Rapid City trapshooter Matt Bartholow’s streak of hitting 1,840 trapshooting singles’ targets in a row that started on Aug. 1, 2013, ended. The all-time national record of 2,166 was set in 2009 by David Shaeffer Jr. of Maryland.
20 years ago on June 2, 2004: Rapid City Post 22 defeated Cheyenne (WY) 8-2 at Coors Field in Denver. Post 22 was the first SD team that had the opportunity to play at the 9-year-old MLB field for the Colorado Rockies. Post 22 used RBI doubles from Brian Estes and Broc Swanson with Adam Waits picking up the win on the mound. Playing in a major league facility is the cake, and the win is the frosting, legendary Rapid City coach Dave Ploof told legendary Rapid City journalist Roger Toland. Post 22 also played in the first Legion games hosted by the Metrodome in a doubleheader Rapid City swept from Minnetonka on July 16, 1984.
30 years ago on June 3, 1994: The Circus Sports Bar South Dakota amateur baseball all-star team defeated an all-women’s all-star team 3-2 in front of 2,305 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Colorado Silver Bullets, managed by Phil Niekro (who won 318 MLB games with his knuckleball), are playing 50 games across the country this summer. The Circus team, managed by Aberdeen’s Bob Beattie, won the Over-40 World Series last November in Phoenix.
40 years ago on June 4, 1984: Aberdeen Central graduate Kevin Andersh was the first pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the MLB amateur free agent draft. Andersh, 20, recently completed his junior season at the University of New Mexico. With his 94 mph fastball, Andersh was the 15th player chosen in the draft. Kent Torve of Rapid City was taken in the third round by the Chicago White Sox. Torve recently completed his junior year at San Diego State.
50 years ago on June 8, 1974: The South Dakota High School Activities Association’s Board of Control has approved the first state tournaments for girls’ basketball. The Class B tourney will be the first week of December in 1975 followed by the Class A tourney in the second week.
