Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern, Groton win tourney games

NORTHVILLE - Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern and Groton picked up victories during the opening day of the Northville Tournament in American Legion baseball action on Saturday. W-I-N stopped Hamlin-Castlewood 9-2, while Groton defeated Claremont 11-1 and blanked Hamlin-Castlewood 9-0. Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern pulled away from a 4-2 lead with five runs in the fourth inning of its victory. Sam Vetter, Alec Mikkelson, and Dawson Ward each had RBI singles in the frame. Mikkelson also had a two-run double in a three-run third inning. Groton scored early and often in its two victories. Brevin Fliehs had two hits and knocked in three runs against Claremont, while Bradin Althoff had two hits and plated two. Althoff had a two-run double in the first inning, while Fliehs has a bases-loaded triple in the third. Groton had three three-run innings against Hamlin-Castlewood.
