A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 21-27:

Last year on July 21, 2023: The Aberdeen Smittys defeated Watertown 1-0 to advance the State A American Legion Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2017. Phillip Zens led the Smittys (27-16) with the pitching shutout, giving up only five hits and striking out six. Zens also had the game’s only RBI. Casey Vining and Ethan Kjenstad had the only two hits (both singles) in the game for the winners.

10 years ago on July 27, 2014: The Aberdeen Swim Club won its first South Dakota Long Course Outdoor State Championship since 1982.

20 years ago on July 24, 2004: Ray Strand of Rapid City shot a two-day total of 148 to win the South Dakota Men’s Senior Golf Tournament at Lee Park in Aberdeen. Last year’s champ, Lee Brandt of Sioux Falls, was third with a 151.

30 years ago on July 23, 1994: South Dakota is estimated to have 260,000 or more deer, according to state Game, Fish and Parks officials.

40 years ago on July 21, 1984: Evelyn Brick, 53, of Aberdeen was the state runner-up in women’s singles at the South Dakota Trap Shoot in Crooks near Sioux Falls.

50 years ago on July 27, 1974: A cheerleader camp that drew almost 100 high schoolers ended in Brookings. A team from Dallas instructed campers on special drills and routines as well as the social graces.
