SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central got off to a solid start, hit a bit of lull in the middle, and then finished strong in three tennis duals against Sioux Falls opponents on Friday. The Golden Eagles blanked Washington 9-0, dropped a 5-4 decision to Jefferson, and then fell to O’Gorman 7-2.
After rolling past Washington, Central won a pair of doubles matches against Jefferson and lost the other in a super tiebreaker.
“We had a great start with Jefferson, taking two of the three doubles,” said Central coach John Vogel. “Moving on to singles, both the temp and our opponents ramped up. Julia Knie played great with her straight sets victory at flight one. Her younger sister, Sarah, was our only other singles victory. A couple others came close.”
The Golden Eagles fell in a tiebreaker in one match and dropped a 7-5 set in another.
Vogel said the Jefferson dual took four hours and then his team had to play an O’Gorman squad which hadn’t played yet.
“So they were fresh and we weren’t, which was obvious in doubles,” Vogel said, “but then the sun went down and our effort returned.
Central received wins from Reese Comstock at flight three singles and Sarah Knie at flight five.
“Reese played great, especially after her disappointing loss in her previous match,” Vogel said. “Sarah is off to a good start at flight five as she picked up another win, and once again Julia played great.”
Vogel said he was proud of the way his players battled and finished strong after a long day on the courts.
“I was super impressed with how the girls ended the day,” Vogel said. “After doubles, I was concerned that they’d just throw in the towel, but almost all of them dug in and really made OG work.”
The Golden Eagles will face the other two Sioux Falls schools, Roosevelt and Lincoln today.
