SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central swept Sioux Falls Roosevelt 9-0 on Saturday, but is was an 8-1 loss to Sioux Falls Lincoln that was probably more noteworthy for the Golden Eagles.

The margin of difference against one of the perennial Class AA tennis powers was not indicative of how close the dual was.

“It’s a good 1-8 loss, I guess,” said Central coach John Vogel. “I don’t know if there is such a thing.”

The Eagles pushed the Patriots in most of the matches, losing three super tiebreakers and another regular tiebreaker along the way, and also winning a match in a super breaker.

“This has been a tough year for breakers,” Vogel said. “The girls were really excited about how we played.”

Vogel noted that the four super breakers in singles took place almost simultaneously.

Avery Tennant won her match at flight two singles 11-9 in the super.

Vogel noted that Tennant had been battling all weekend, so she deserved win that match.

“It was almost fitting for her to be the one to pull it out,” Vogel said.

Julia Knie fell 10-6 in a super at first flight singles, Reece Comstock lost in an identical breaker score at third flight, and Chloe Ladner came up short 10-3 in a super tiebreaker at fourth flight.

Still, it was satisfying for the Eagles to know that if just a few points went the other way, that dual would have been much tighter.

“That’s how close we are with them,” Vogel said. “It’s nice to know that you can play with them.”

Central returns to action this coming weekend at Brookings with three matches on Friday, and two more on Saturday.
