BROOKINGS – Aberdeen Roncalli split a pair of girls’ tennis matches against Class AA opponents in Brookings Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers dropped an 8-1 decision to Yankton to begin the day before bouncing back with a 6-3 victory over the host Bobcats during the jamboree.

“It was as nice of a day as you could ask for tennis in Brookings today,” said Cavaliers’ head coach Jason Haskell.

Roncalli’s lone win against the Gazelles came courtesy of Raley Haskell’s flight three win over Paige Mitzel.

Still, Coach Haskell said, his team performed well.

“Our 8-1 final against Yankton was not fully indicative of the team’s play,” he said. “Flights three through five put up good fights and took six, four and four games, respectively.”

Despite the overall loss to open the day, Roncalli was able to bounce back against Brookings.

River Haskell and Keira Rivett each won their singles matches and teamed up for a doubles victory in a tiebreak, as well.

Both of River Haskell’s wins against Brookings came in tiebreak fashion.

“By the end of her second match, the heat and sun were taking a toll on everyone,” Coach Haskell said. “She dug deep to refocus and jump out to a 5-1 lead in the tiebreak, and then traded points for a couple serves before she drew a return error with her serve to secure the win.”

Roncalli will take off the holiday weekend before returning to action Tuesday in Milbank.
