MILLER – Aberdeen Roncalli claimed the opening set, but fourth-rated Miller recovered to take the final three en route to a 3-1 win over the Cavaliers Tuesday evening in a meeting of Class A volleyball contenders.

Roncalli rattled off a 25-18 victory to begin the night, Miller took the final three sets 25-22, 25-23 and 25-13 to remain unbeaten on the season.

Ava Hanson led the way offensively for the Cavaliers, finishing with 10 kills, a service ace and a pair of blocks at the net. McKenna O’Keefe added nine kills, while Maddie Huber recorded 20 assists and two aces.

Roncalli coach Leesa Ware said she was happy with the way her squad battled.

“They played hard,” Ware said, “we just couldn’t answer Miller. Our defense and blockers were off and Miller had extremely good hitters. They found all the right holes.”

Paige Werdel had 15 kills and four aces for the Rustlers, who improved to 4-0 on the season. Aleah Schlechter notched 14 kills and three blocks.

Roncalli is now 1-2 to begin the year, both losses coming to ranked squads (Class B No. 3 Northwestern and Class A No. 4 Miller).

The Cavaliers will host Tiospa Zina Thursday at Roncalli Gym.
