A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 22-28:

Last year on Feb. 22, 2020: Before a pre-Covid crowd of about 3,497 hometown fans, Aberdeen Central graduate Brianna Kusler led the Northern State women’s basketball team to a 73-71 win to end the regular season. Kusler had 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. NSU’s Jessi Marti made the game-winning free throws with 21 seconds left.

10 years ago on Feb. 24, 2011: Armour coaching legend Burnell Glanzer celebrated his 58^th birthday by getting his 600^th boys’ basketball career win. His Tripp-Delmont-Armour team defeated Kimball 75-35.

20 years ago on Feb. 28, 2001: The first three-pointer of a player’s career led the Langford boys’ basketball team the District 2B championship game. Langford senior Casey Darling caught a 60-foot in-bounds pass, turned around and banked in a 30-foot three pointer at the buzzer to give his team a 62-60 win over Northwestern.

30 years ago on Feb. 23, 1991: Without any individual champions, coach Fran Esser’s Redfield wrestlers won their second straight State B title with 129.5 points. Tri-Valley was second with 111. Seven of Redfield eight qualifiers scored points, including second-place finishes by Fred Osborn, Adam Roth and Joe Paulson.

40 years ago on Feb. 27, 1981: The NSU women’s basketball team (24-3) won the South Dakota NAIA title in Rapid City to advance to the regional tourney in Kansas. The Wolves of coach Curt Fredrickson won their 17^th straight game by beating South Dakota Tech 73-61 behind a combined 48 points from Cathy Coyle, Lori Burkhardt and Janelle Frank.

50 years ago on Feb. 27, 1971: The NSU men’s basketball team got the winning basket from an unexpected hero in its 92-91 District 12 basketball win over Dakota Wesleyan at an overstuffed Aberdeen Civic Arena. NSU center Gary Evjen found teammate Bill Luther open in the corner, and Luther scored the winning basket with two seconds left. NSU fans swarmed the floor, but DWU got a timeout called with one second left. Then DWU standout senior Jim Hall got off a halfcourt shot that almost went in. Evjen scored 39 for the winners while Greg Hansen had 34 points for DWU, which led at halftime 53-40.
