Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Sept. 22-28:

Last year on Sept. 22, 2023: Two of the state’s best nine-man football teams played one of the most exciting games in the young history of NSU’s Dacotah Bank Stadium, which opened in 2021. Warner quarterback Hunter Cramer scored on a 1-yard TD run with 12 seconds left and Alec Mikkelsen added the PAT to lift the Monarchs past Faulkton 27-20. Faulkton tied the game with 5:42 left on Layne Cotton’s 71-yard TD run.

10 years ago on Sept. 28, 2014: Onida native Tom Byrum, who turned 54 today, finished in second place at the Champions’ Tour First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, a shot off of leader John Cook at 11-under.

20 years ago on Sept. 25, 2004: Toby Korrodi threw four touchdowns as NSU defeated Minnesota State-Moorhead 37-10.

30 years ago on Sept. 24, 1994: Jockey Pat Day rode Tabasco Cat in winning the $400,000 Kentucky Cup Classic. Day has relatives in South Dakota.

40 years ago on Sept. 22, 1984: Former Aberdeen Roncalli all-stater Ian deHueck played in his first game for Notre Dame. deHueck had three carries for 11 yards as the Irish defeated Colorado 55-14

50 years ago on Sept. 26, 1974: Jim Marking, 47, has resigned as the SDSU basketball coach to take a leadership position with a Brookings-based insurance company. In 14 seasons at SDSU with nine of them as the head coach, Marking’s Jackrabbits went 148-80 and led the SDSU freshman team to a 44-9 mark in his five seasons as the SDSU assistant. His SDSU teams, known for their fast breaks as the “Running Rabbits,” won four North Central Conference titles, made five post-seasons and went to the NCAA college division national tournament in 1970. The Parkston native was 196-67 as a high school coach at Bruce (1-19, its gym had a pot-bellied stove on the court — “it made for a great pick,” Marking always joked), Hayti (117-13) and Watertown (78-35). His Hayti teams won a state title and a pair of state runner-up finishes as did his Watertown teams. Spencer native and former SDSU standout under Marking Gene Zulk is taking
over as coach of the Jackrabbits.
