CLEAR LAKE – A pair of Sioux Valley runners swept individual championships during the Deuel Invitational Cross Country Meet on Monday afternoon.

Carson Wosje won the boys’ race in a time of 17:06.50, while Maci Licht won the girls’ race in a time of 19:30.47.

Deuel had three of the top seven runners in the boys’ division and three of the top 10 in the girls’ division.

Kamryn Nesheim of Clark-Willow Lake was runner-up in girls. Aberdeen Roncalli had a pair of girls in the top 10 as Addison Cassady finished seventh and Hazel Kannegieter was eighth.

“Those two run ran really well,” said Roncalli coach Casey Steele. “It was a tough field.”

Steele said the girls work together to make each other better.

“They’re really good friends and they push each other hard and encourage each other,” Steele said. “It’s a neat thing to watch between the two of them.”

On the boys’ side Ryder Graff of Sisseton was runner-up. Roncalli’s Matt Peterson ended up taking 17th.

“Matt ran well for the boys,” Steele said. “He tempered his start. He has a tendency to get out way too fast and it makes him struggle in the middle. He ran much more evenly today.”

Steele said the course presented a challenge for the runners.

“It’s a very challenging course. Lots of hills,” Steele said. “It was a great course to run on.”

He noted that the Roncalli middle school girls took four of the top five spots and won the team title.

Roncalli competes in another meet Wednesday in Faulkton as it continues to gear up for conference, region and state meets.

“We’re still pushing the training hard, so we can back off a little bit before those big meets,” Steele said.
