Scoring surge fuels Warner victory over Roncalli

WARNER – Warner overcame an uncharacteristic slow start with an even more remarkable scoring run Tuesday night.

The third-rated Class B Monarchs outscored Aberdeen Roncalli 21-1 from late in the opening set to the start of the second on the way to a 25-15, 25-9, 25-13 non-conference volleyball home sweep.

“We’ve been working a lot on serving,” said Warner coach Kari Jung, “trying to be more aggressive.”

It was senior Jordyn Jensen that propelled the Monarchs on the surge that left them in total control. After Warner scored to break a 15-15 tie, Jensen scored nine straight points to finish off the set, then served four more times to start the second set. After the Cavaliers won a point, Libby Scepaniak then racked up eight more points to give Warner a commanding 11-1 advantage.

“It was no turning back then,” said Roncalli coach Leesa Ware. “I feel like once you get down when you’re playing against Warner, there’s just no turning back and they just go and go.”

Jensen said she was unaware how many points she had served in a row.

“I just try to do what I can for my team,” Jensen said. “They play so hard, so I just try to give that back to them.”

The Cavaliers bolted out to a 5-1 start to begin the match before Jung called a time out. From there, the Monarchs played with a lot more energy.

“She called that time out. We just talked like we need to bring the momentum back, just settle down, play our game,” Jensen said. “We had a little bit of nerves right away coming off the weekend with three losses, so we just really wanted to get this one back to get our momentum back.”

While Warner racked up a dozen aces, more than anything the serves got Roncalli out of system and the Cavaliers were never able to get on track offensively.

“We kind of fell to just playing a bland offense. We were sending over too many free balls,” said Roncalli junior Rylee Voeller. “We would get in our head over serve receive and it kind of just stuck, and we couldn’t dig ourselves out the hole that we had built for ourselves.”

Another key factor in the contest was Warner’s quick offense that produced one kill after another. Kyleigh Schopp had 11 kills, MaKenna Leidholt added eight, and Olivia Marcuson finished with six.

“I feel like our setters did a really good job making choices,” Jung said. “They weren’t going to the same hitter, so they couldn’t’ get the block there as well, and that really helped our offense.”

While Roncalli was able to get a block up on some attempts, it was often just a tad late and balls ended up going out of bounds.

“I think we struggled at hitting off of their quick hits,” Voeller said. “Something we need to work on just getting our block there on quick hits and figuring out our defense in the back court to try to help our block on some of those.”

While the Cavaliers were unable to come up with enough answers against that offense, it will help the squad in the long run, according to Ware.

“They run such a fast offense, but that’s only going to make us better,” Ware said.

Jung was pleased with her team’s effort in the sweep over Roncalli.

“That’s a good team,” Jung said. “I was really happy how we performed, because Roncalli’s got some great athletes, they’re quick, they get after the ball.”

The Monarchs, 17-4, are gearing up for a showdown against unbeaten Hitchcock-Tulare next Tuesday. While there are still contests before then, the fourth-rated Patriots are definitely on the radar.

“We’re really looking forward to that game, but we just got to play what we can now and then build up to that game,” Jensen said. “We’re really excited to play them though.”

Roncalli, 5-6, has a busy week ahead with home matches against Clark-Willow Lake on Thursday and Belle Fourche on Friday.

“We got a big week ahead of us,” Ware said, “and we’re going to be ready to go.”
