HILO, Hawaii – The Northern State women’s basketball team was withing striking distance of a top-quality foe, before a fourth-quarter scoring drought doomed the Wolves on Saturday evening.
Undefeated California State Dominguez Hills pulled away from a five-point lead early in the final period by outscoring NSU 13-1 on the way to a 60-43 win during the Big Island Holiday Classic.
The Wolves trailed just 47-42 following an Izzy Moore basket with 8:59 remaining. However, Northern managed just one point the rest of the game as Dominguez Hills took control to improve to 8-0 on the season.
Officially the California squad scored 13 unanswered points in five and a half minutes. Interestingly enough, Northern outscored Dominguez Hills 1-0 in the final four minutes of the game.
The Wolves were led in scoring by Decontee Smith with 10 points. Alayna Benike followed with nine, and Moore added eight. Michaela Jewett grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds.
Northern struggled shooting from all spots on the floor, managing just 31.4 percent from the field, 13.3 percent from 3-point range, and 50 percent from the free-throw line.
The Wolves, 4-3 on the season, head to Moorhead, Minn. on Thursday night to resume Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play by taking on MSU, Moorhead.
