FARGO, N.D. – Led by six place winners, including a runner-up finish from Owen Ward, the Aberdeen Central boys’ wrestling team took third place in the team standings at the Rumble on the Red Wrestling Tournament on Friday.
Ward took second at 150 pounds for the Golden Eagles.
“He tore through the bracket,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden.
Included in his run to the title was an impressive win on Thursday.
“He took on a two-time state champion in the quarterfinals,” Bowden said. “He had a very good tournament.”
Central also received fourth-place finishes from Esten Foss and Mason Schrempp, and fifth-place finishes from Jackson Dargatz, Ridley Waldo, and Cole Dunlavy.
Dargatz is just an eighth-grader.
“In the semifinal match he was one situation away from being in the finals, then it was the same thing in his conso semi,” Bowden said. “He had a great tournament. He just keeps on improving from week to week.”
Schrempp also had a solid tourney for the Golden Eagles.
“Mason is always there. He’s always in the thick of things,” Bowden said. “He lost to the same guy twice.”
Bowden noted that Foss had a tough draw in his division.
“He ran into a couple of really quality kids,” Bowden said of the 63-team tourney. “A tournament that deep, you’re going to run into some guys.”
Waldo bounced back from a tough loss in the quarters on Thursday to take fifth.
“He was winning the match all the way until the third, and then came up just a little bit short at the end to the guy that won it,” Bowden said. “He’s right there.”
Dunlavy finished the tourney with a pin after a pair of losses.
“Cole kind of hit his stride pretty good on the front side making the semifinal,” Bowden said, noting he won on his final match in total control. “He finished it with dominant fashion.”
Bowden was pleased with his team’s top-three finish in a tourney that featured squads from a four-state area.
“I think we competed hard. The effort was definitely there,” Bowden said. “The guys competed really hard. Now it’s more so about sharpening up the tactical things a little bit and understanding where we’re at individually and as a team, and just try to better that situation a little bit each week.”
Central has duals at Huron on Tuesday and Pierre on Thursday before competing in a tournament at Brandon Valley on Saturday.
