Golden Eagles collect two girls’ dual victories

Aberdeen Central didn’t get in as many matches as it wanted, but the Golden Eagles made the most of the opportunities that they did have Thursday evening.

Central defeated Harrisburg 39-27 and Watertown 47-24 in a pair of Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ wrestling duals at Golden Eagles Arena.

“The pair of wins was nice,” said Central coach Jake Flakus. “We wish we could have wrestled a couple more matches, but we’ll take what we can get.”

A pair of Golden Eagles recorded a pair of lopsided wins on the night.

Grace Reszler finished with two wins by fall, her second one coming after she grabbed a 7-1 lead over her foe.

“I just got both wrists and I ran it,” Reszler said.

The sophomore wasn’t sure what to expect heading into the competition.

“I’ve been sick for over a week and then I come back and I didn’t expect to win both matches,” Reszler said, “but I pinned both of them.”

Reszler is a wrestler that tends to take a toll on her opponents, according to Flakus.

“She’s one of those girls that really just likes to grind on top,” Flakus said. “She will wear out girls. If she sees the opportunity, she’ll pounce on it.”

Reszler is looking forward to the Lee Wolf Tournament on Saturday and has one particular opponent in mind.

“The girl from Pierre that’s in my weight class, she’s a state champ, Reszler said. “Hopefully, I draw good seeding so I don’t have to wrestle her until maybe semis.”

Madison Little won by a pin and a technical fall in her two matches.

“I kind of just go out there and circle, and try to do my slide by,” Little said. “If I wrestle like a beginner, I try to work on my shots, because I’m not very confident in my shots.”

Flakus said Little is working to add more offensive moves.

“She is really good on her feet,” Flakus said. “We’ve been working on trying to expand her takedowns.”

Little wrestled for Groton last season before transferring to Central. She said there is one noticeable difference.

“I have more people to wrestle when I’m with Aberdeen,” Little said, “in the room to practice with and at tournaments.”

Little is pleased with what she has accomplished so far this season.

“I’m really satisfied,” Little said, “because being in eighth grade and being ranked third, I’m really proud of myself.”

In another notable match on the night, Arianna Goldade finished off a high-scoring match with a pin.

“That was good to see her give up some points, but stay calm in the match,” Flakus said, “and then find a way to get that girl on her back and get a big win.”

Jasmine Maas also won a pair of matches by fall for the Golden Eagles.

Central is now gearing up for the Lee Wolf.

Flakus said the numbers may be a bit light, but the competition will be strong.

“Some of the brackets might be a little bit smaller, but there’s still going to be some stout competition,” Flakus said. “One bracket only had eight girls in it, but half of those girls were state placers.”
