Central boys win Lee Wolf team title, have three champs

Aberdeen Central showed why it is one of the elite wrestling programs in the state on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles won the boys’ team crown, and had three individual champs during the Lee Wolf Invitational at a packed Golden Eagles Arena.

“I think the kids competed hard. I think that’s the big thing. You can see the effort in kids,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “Even when we fell in some places, they still gave good efforts. That’s a good thing. That’s where we want to be. We want to put out as much effort as possible. Now, it’s just about getting a little bit smarter with our wrestling, and get in the situation we want to be in.”

Esten Foss, Mason Schrempp, and Elias Biegler all won their respective weight classes.

Foss gained a measure of revenge against a pair of quality Class B foes en route to winning the 113-pound title over Kayden Tchida of Sisseton 7-6. Foss also avenged a previous set to Roukyn Robbins of Winner in the semifinals.

“I knew it was going to be good competition with the B schools,” Foss said, “but I trusted that all the matches I had this year I’ve learned from. I lost to both of those guys this year.”

Foss said that he has been putting in the work and it is paying off.

“I’ve been working hard to improve, because I’ve had bad tendencies for a few years,” Foss said, “and just working to improve on those now. It’s really improved my wrestling.”

Schrempp won his first Lee Wolf title, defeating Sisseton’s Holden Hawkins 7-6 in the final at 157 pounds. While the match came down to the closing seconds, Schrempp believed he would win.

“I’m confident on my feet. It’s my best position, but I shouldn’t be in that position anyways,” Schrempp. “I go out there to dominate, not hold on in close matches like that.”

While there was a large crowd on hand, Schrempp said he tries to focus only on his matches.

“After five years I don’t even notice it,” Schrempp said. “Go out there and do what you love to do on the mat, and everything will take care of itself.”

Biegler defended his Lee Wolf title from a year ago. He said was more in control of his matches this time around.

He said while trying to focus on his match, he couldn’t help but watch a bit of the Schrempp match right before his.

“I tried to zone in a little bit, but I couldn’t help peaking over here from behind the bleachers,” Biegler said. “That was a great match and I’m just happy to see my teammate succeed.”

Making his second straight Lee Wolf championship even more meaningful is the fact that it was Biegler’s 100th career victory.

“It means a lot. I’ve kind of had linear progression since freshman year,” Biegler said. “I was getting beat out of every tournament. I’d probably had over twice as many losses as wins, and that ratio just kept on getting better and better as the years went on.”

Sisseton’s Ian Metz scored a big win over Watertown’s Brody Randall in the finals at 126. Randall was an undefeated state champion at Hamlin a year ago.

Metz is coming off a knee injury and has only wrestled a handful of matches this season. He had a lead, lost it, and then came up with a pin to break a 7-7 tie.

“My shape was bad. That’s why I lost my lead,” Metz said. “I got too tired and couldn’t wrestle the way I wanted to.”

He credited his practice partner Tchida for getting him prepared for the season.

“Just practicing with my partner Kayden Tchida every day,” Metz said, “just getting into those positions every day, just wrestling there, and getting better in positions.”

Jacksen Carter of Wessington Springs-Woonsocket-Wolsey-Wessington defeated Central’s Tate Huff in the championship at 132 pounds.

Carter said his conditioning, which included a 28-day camp in Missouri this past summer, played a key role.

“You can give it all to training,” Carter said. “Through the whole summer I didn’t stop wrestling at all.”

The sophomore, who is coming off his only loss of the season, said he felt good all day on the way to winning the title.

“I was ready coming into the match. Warmed up really well, just feeling myself through the whole tournament,” Carter said. “Just knew I could get on my attacks, and if I did get on my attacks I knew I could win the match.”

Josh Kannegieter of Clark-Willow Lake took care of business with a first-period pin in the 175-pound championship.

“At the beginning of the day they said it might be one of the toughest one-day tournaments,” Kannegieter said, “so just go out there, be aggressive, do your stuff, and see what happens.”

The senior, who finished fourth at state last year, wants to cap off his prep career in a big way.

“I want to be a state champion, just like everyone else,” Kannegieter said. “One step at a time and hopefully get there.”

The Stan Opp Outstanding Wrestler Award went to Ryken Orel of Winner.

Central hosts Brookings in a dual on Thursday.

“I’m proud of the effort that we had,” Bowden said. “I’m proud of the kids, I’m proud of the coaching staff. It was a great weekend to finish a great week.”
