Ava Hanson etched her name in history as the sixth Aberdeen Roncalli girl to ever record 1,000 career points.

The senior reached the milestone total in a 66-13 non-conference girls’ basketball win over Dupree at Roncalli Gym Friday night.

Hanson had no idea that she was only one basket away from the 1,000-point mark as Roncalli coach Derek Larson kept it a secret from her, only telling her mom and sister.

“No idea. I had an inkling like a couple games ago like when is this gonna happen,” Hanson said. “They didn’t say a word, I had no idea. … My mom knew, and she didn’t tell me, which is crazy because she spills the beans often.”

All six players in program history to score 1,000 points have been under the reign of Larson. He kept this one under the table, so the Cavaliers could focus on Dupree.

“We weren’t gonna announce it at the time. We were gonna wait until after the game so our focus could be on the game,” said Larson. “Again, happy for her. She’s the sixth player in program history. I was fortunate enough to coach them all, so that’s pretty cool. A pretty good list she’s on.”

The Northern State commit needed just two points coming into the contest, and nailed a 3-pointer on the first possession of the night. Unknowing that the shot put her over the 1,000 point mark, she had just planned to help get her team over a three-game losing streak.

“My game plan going in was just to have fun and get off these three losses, because it’s been draining us as a team,” Hanson said. “Just mentally coming in, ready to play the game, have fun and just play as a team. Hitting that three pointer, I was just like here we go, we’re gonna beat this.”

The Cavaliers set the tone early against Dupree. The drive chart at the start of the game was: 3 -pointer from Hanson, Roncalli steal, 3-pointer from Rylee Voeller, Roncalli steal, layup from Voeller.

“I thought we came out ready to go. Hit some jump shots early, defense was really good,” Larson said.

The Cavaliers used their full-court defense to get back to their winning ways.

“We got up in full court, I don’t think they crossed half court for a solid two and a half, three minutes, so that was really fun,” said Hanson. “You just gotta play basketball and that’s what we did tonight.”

The Cavaliers led 31-2 at the end of the first quarter. Hanson had 11 points in the period and Voeller added eight.

“That’s just what you have to do. You have to get up right away,” Hanson said. “We wanted this win so bad that we just put everything in it to win, and that’s what you have to do.”

The Cavaliers, who had been outscored by 54 points in the second half of their last three games, made sure there would be no let down this time.

“It was big for us to come out and not just go through the motions in the second half even though we had a big lead. I thought we came out and were aggressive,” said Larson. “With the clock running, it seemed like everything happened so fast. Starters out with I think four minutes to go in the third quarter.”

Although Hanson didn’t see the court for the rest of the game, she was still active on the bench cheering on the younger Cavaliers, realizing that she was once in that spot at the beginning of her career.

“I cheer on my teammates. That’s the best thing you can do. In the moment, on the bench is just to be there for your teammates and have fun,” said Hanson. “Have fun on the bench and then know when your teammates score. I was like that a couple years ago scoring my first point.”

Even with a running clock, the Cavaliers were still able to produce 10 fourth-quarter points, led by freshmen Olivia Dix with six and Elyana Roach with four. Emma Vogel also got into the scoring column.

“It was also cool to see Emma Vogel, who doesn’t see a ton of time, step up and make a big shot. She was able to play with the seniors, which doesn’t happen all that much. Happy for her,” Larson said. “Elyana probably had her best practice of her career. We told her that (Thursday). She just played with a different energy and again, it was awesome to see.”

Hanson ended with a game-high 19 points on the night, bringing her career total to 1,017.

Voeller finished with 10 points and McKenna O’Keefe added eight.
