EAGLE BUTTE – Aberdeen Central had a record-setting day at the Region 3A Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles scored a tourney record 302 points and qualified all 14 wrestlers for the upcoming state tournament.
“The team effort was the highlight,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “We set the scoring record for the region tournament, 302 points, so I think you got to take your hats off to all the kids.”
The Golden Eagles were close to setting the record a year ago, but came up just short. They left no doubt on Saturday.
“We were a point off last year at 280. It would have set it by a half a point,” Bowden said. “We beat our goal by 22 points.”
A big key in piling up that team point title was getting extra points while racking up wins along the way.
“Bonus points do a lot,” Bowden said. “When you can go out there and win, that’s great, but when you can separate yourself and get a fall, you can get a tech fall, or a major decision, you’re really setting your team up for something great.”
While Central was favored to win the team championship, no one knew about the unmatched points total.
“That’s our expectation,” Bowden said of winning the team crown. “This is something that we knew we could do, was it something that we could score this many points, I don’t know, but we went in there and did it.”
Central received individual championships from Jackson Dargatz, Eston Foss, Will Allen, Tate Huff, Ridley Waldo, Mason Schrempp, Elias Biegler, Grayden Timm, and Cole Dunlavy.
“We had nine champs. That’s nothing to scoff at,” Bowden said. “That’s pretty hard to do.”
Central also added three runner-up finishes, a third place and a fourth showing.
As a result, the Golden Eagles did what they could to help set themselves up for the state tournament. Bowden said his wrestlers are ready.

“We’re battle tested. We’ve been to tournaments bigger than our state tournament. … We’ve been through the fire,” Bowden said. “We’ve wrestled everyone in the state within our class, so we’re ready.”
While it was a big day for the Golden Eagles, they still have unfinished business with the most important tournament of the season on top for Thursday through Saturday at The Monument in Rapid City.
“It was a great day,” Bowden said. “We’re happy with what we did, but we’re going to turn our focus to the bigger tournament next week and see what we can get done.”
