A trio of Northern State teams entered postseason action this past week in Wolves Athletics.

Postseason action kicked off with the track & field teams competing in the NSIC Indoor Championships in Mankato, Minn. Both the men’s and women’s squads took fifth as a team, with two gold medal finishes and nine all-conference performances.

On Day 1, Sam Tremelling defended his belt in the pole vault taking home gold, followed by Eli Radtke in second, both earning all-conference. Romane Maugest took third in the pole vault, hitting a provisional mark, while also adding on all-conference accolades.

On Day 2, true freshman Anna Skachenko took home the gold for the Wolves in the 600m, followed by her teammate Alli Jackson, who took second, both getting all-conference honors.

Chris Weber took silver in the 60m, breaking his own school record once again and is currently ranked in the top 25 nationally. Nathan Alto took third in the 3000m, and Summer Carlson took second in the 1000m breaking the school record with both earning all-conference.

On Sunday, the women’s basketball team took on Sioux Falls for the third time this season, and won for the third time this season with a 75-61 quarterfinal victory. Alayna Benike was the leading scorer with 18 points and also had 10 rebounds, followed by Michaela Jewett and Madelyn Bragg with 16 points apiece, Rianna Fillipi with 11, Morgan Fiedler with 10. Fillipi also notched 11 assists, breaking the season assists record, and tying the single-game record.

On Monday, the Wolves faced the 11th-ranked Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul. Northern’s NSIC Tournament run ended in the semis with a 66-44 loss. Fillipi was the leading scorer with 11 points. Jewett added 10, and Bragg contributed 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Wolves wrestling competed in the Super Region V tournament in Sioux Falls. Unfortunately, no Wolves advanced to the National Tournament, but three Wolves fell one spot short. Sloan Johannsen, Wyatt Turnquist and Damen Pape all made it to the third-place match, but all missed qualifying for nationals by one place. Griffin Lundeen was the only other place-finisher, taking sixth in his first Super Regions.

Wolves baseball got their first wins under their belt in a doubleheader sweep against Dakota Wesleyan University. In the first game, Carson Zimmel threw a complete-game shutout as the Wolves won 4-0 on six hits. Drew Benson hit a two-run home run, and Jordan Hull had the other two RBIs in the game.

The Wolves closed out the doubleheader with an 8-6 win over the Tigers. Brennan Phillips went 2-for-5 with two runs, a triple and drove in a run. Jack Weidner also went 2-for-5 with two runs and a pair of RBIs. Nick Friedges hit a two-run home run, and the other two RBIs came from Drew Benson and Dillon Castellanos.

The latest rankings for the Central Region for women’s basketball have the Wolves sitting in ninth. The selection show for the NCAA DII National Tournament takes place Sunday night at 9:30 p.m.

Wolves baseball will travel down to Tucson, Ariz. to have a little spring training of their own as they play nine games in 10 days over Spring Break. They kick it off Friday taking on Dakota Wesleyan once again.

Wolves softball will also be on the road for Spring Break as they’ll travel to Branson, Mo., to start their 12-game road series in six days in four different cities.

A select few athletes will be able to travel to Indianapolis for the DII NCAA Indoor Championships starting on Wednesday, March 12.
