A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 6-15, 2025:

Last year on March 12, 2024: The book is closed on the 2024 Summit League Tournament. It was a good read for William Kyle III and his champion SDSU teammates. In the tourney, Kyle collected 39 points, 26 rebounds, 11 dunks, three team wins and two trophies (team title and tourney MVP).

10 years ago on March 14, 2015: The South Dakota varsity hockey coaches of the year are both from Aberdeen, Jon Murdy for the boys, and for the second year in a row, Rob Weinmeister for the girls.

20 years ago on March 8, 2005: Milbank junior Justin Peters made an 80-foot shot after a missed Clark free throw with .7 seconds left to force a tie at 45 and overtime in the Region 1A championship. The Bulldogs went on to beat Clark for a berth in the State A Tournament. A month ago on Feb. 4, No. 1-rated Clark (16-0) defeated No. 2 Milbank (15-1) 76-67 in two overtimes.

30 years ago on March 11, 1995: Despite standout Jerome LeBeau being sidelined most of the game with a knee injury, Red Cloud won its first basketball state championship in Rapid City. The Crusaders defeated Howard 83-76 with a great team effort paced by Jesse LeBeau (24 points), Willie Richards (23) and Dave Brown (20, 11 coming on free throws in the final 158 seconds). Coach Dusty LeBeau’s champions finished 23-2.

40 years ago on March 9, 1985: SDSU defeated Grand Valley (MI) State 58-57 to win the NCAA DII North Central Regional Men’s Basketball Tournament. Mark Tetzlaff scored the winning basket with 2:22 left. The Lakers than held the ball until they launched a 20-foot jumper with four seconds left. The ball skipped off the rim and tourney MVP Tetzlaff secured the rebound.

50 years ago on March 6, 1975: Dell Rapids St. Mary (25-0) defeated Cheyenne Eagle-Butte 42-22 in the first round of the State B Boys’ Basketball Tournament. The two teams shot a combined three free throws (14 total fouls were called in the game) and neither team made a free throw.
